Everything you need to know about the spectacular end of season F1® race

Why go?
It’s hard to find a more spectacular setting for a Grand Prix than Yas Island, on the eastern side of Abu Dhabi.  You can immerse yourself in opulent grandeur in the many 5-star hotels and the 5.55-kilometer (3.45-mile) Yas Marina Circuit provides a suitably glamorous venue for the culmination of the Formula One World Championship as cars speed alongside the island’s spectacular marina and under the futuristic Yas Hotel Abu Dhabi.

Closest airports to Yas Marina
Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH): located around 30km from the city centre and just 10km from Yas Marina, Abu Dhabi Airport is the logical place to fly into for the Grand Prix this November.

Dubai International Airport (DXB): don’t discount flying into Dubai, just 120km from the centre of Abu Dhabi and 95km from Yas Marina.

How to get to Yas Marina Circuit
Yas Island is inundated with taxis on race weekend. A trip from the centre of Abu Dhabi to Yas Island is inexpensive and can take you directly to the entrance gate in the morning. Free shuttle buses ferry racegoers out of the Marina and to nearby car parks full of taxis after the event.

A free park and ride shuttle service runs for those coming into Abu Dhabi for the race, too. Just show your race ticket to hop on.

Several hotels operate their own complimentary shuttle service for guests visiting the Grand Prix.

Outside the F1

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque: One of the world’s largest and most spectacular mosques, a celebration of all the great Islamic empires in pure white marble and futuristic 21st century design.

Ferrari World: Experience the most thrilling theme park in the world!

Observation Deck at 300: For staggering views across the city head for the 74th floor of Tower 2 at the Etihad Towers Complex, the city’s tallest structure at 300 metres.

The Louvre Abu Dhabi: Even dedicated Formula 1 fans would be doing themselves a great disservice if they didn’t add a couple of extra days to their itinerary to experience the delights of Abu Dhabi. Culture vultures can immerse themselves in art in an array of museums including the Louvre Abu Dhabi opened in 2017, with its iconic hole-punched dome and cool galleries.

Helicopter Tour: For a suitably glitzy way to mark the beginning or end of your F1 trip, why not take a helicopter trip over the city? Cover views of the Emirates Palace, the Corniche, Ferrari World and all the F1 action down on Yas Island.

Desert Safari: For those chasing an adrenaline buzz, take a sunset trip out to the desert in a 4×4 for a roller-coaster ride over sand dunes. Excursions are led by experienced dune drivers and end with dinner and dancing in the desert.

Shopping: Away from the shopping malls featuring international designers, visit the souqs at Mina Port for handwoven rugs and delicious treats such as dates and traditional sweets.

Emirates National Auto Museum: This one is an absolute must for any car fanatic. This public collection of over 200 cars belongs to HH Sheikh Hamad Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan, an incurable petrolhead known as the ‘Rainbow Sheikh’.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc takes his 2nd Grand Prix win

Following a controversial Q3, Charles Leclerc took full advantage of his pole position and triumphed at Monza, producing his second Formula 1 career win for Ferrari despite a late surge by Valtteri Bottas for Mercedes.

This home win for Scuderia Ferrari, celebrating their 90thanniversary this year, was met with triumph by the partisan Monza spectators who turned the grandstands into a sea of red. The celebrations were particularly poignant following the muted celebrations of Leclerc’s first win at Spa Francorchamps, reflecting the sadness in the paddock due to tragic Formula 2 incident that led to the loss of Anthoine Hubert and the ongoing condition of Juan Manuel Correa.

Leclerc became the youngest Ferrari driver to win at Monza and ended a nine-year losing streak at Monza for Ferrari sending the tifosi into raptures of delight. Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton completed the podium, but the Renault team were perhaps the most delighted with their 4thand 5thplaces – easily their most successful weekend of the season so far. Daniel Ricciardo and Nico Hulkenberg had locked out the third row of the grid on Saturday and they were able to capitalise on Sebastian Vettel’s spin with Ricciardo. Full race results below:

  1. Charles Leclers Ferrari
  2. Valtteri Bottas Mercedes
  3. Lewis Hamilton Mercedes

Helpful tips for your visit to Singapore during the Formula 1®

Singapore is such a special travel destination that you may want to leave a couple of days extra in your planning to enjoy Singapore after the excitement of the night time racing of the Singapore Formula 1 Grand Prix.  Singapore is one of the most expensive countries in South East Asia and to ensure that you make the most of your experience, here are a few helpful tips to ease your visit.

TRAVEL

The cheapest and most convenient way to travel round Singapore is to use the extensive public transport system the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT).  A Singapore tourist pass can be purchased which allows unlimited travel both on the MRT and on the bus.  Obviously, some roads will be closed for the Grand Prix weekend which will cause some disruption to the buses (guide below) but this will not affect the MRT.  Taxis are more expensive and Uber is no longer used in Singapore but there is an app called Grab which is very similar to Uber and can be used for ride sharing.

WHAT TO WEAR

Singapore enjoys a year-round tropical climate with high humidity and temperatures ranging from 26 to 34 degrees celcius (78-93 degrees farenheit).  Wear loose clothing in natural fibres if you want to avoid melting into a frazzled mess.

EATING

The rule of thumb here is to eat with the locals. Singapore offers an array of hipster cafes and fine dining restaurants but the local hawker centres are the best places to try authentic local cuisine.  For those suspicious of questionable food hygiene standards, look out for coloured placards which rate every stall from A (the best) to D (possible risk). Smith Street, Little India and Chinatown are places to look out for.

RULES

Singapore is one of the safest cities to visit in the world, due in part to its many laws and regulations which must be strictly adhered to.  Spitting in the street, smoking in public, littering (including sticking chewing gum on public property) will result in a fine.  Illegal drug taking is harshly punished. Smoking is banned in restaurants and clubs as well as within a fixed perimeter around public transport hubs and it is advised to seek out the yellow smokers’ boxes if you really need a smoke!

WATER

The tap water in Singapore is safe to drink so remember your refillable bottle and save the planet!

COMMUNICATION

Wi-fi can be expensive but it is easy to charge your devices as electrical plugs are the same configuration as in the UK.

TIPPING

Tipping for good service is not part of Singapore culture so staff will not expect a tip although it is obviously welcome if you wish to reward excellent service.  Smaller shops and hawkers usually charge a 7% goods and services tax and bars and restaurants often charge an additional 10% service charge (denoted on your bill with a ++ symbol).

3rd Designer Announced for the Amber Lounge Singapore Fashion Show

Amber Lounge are thrilled to announce that Singapore-based fashion house Akosée will be launching their latest collection at the Amber Lounge Singapore Fashion Show on 21st September 2019.

Akosée was founded by designer Anna McBride in 2015. In this short time, she has developed an easy to wear, casual line created in luxurious, natural fibres, that are equally at home on the beach or on the catwalk.

Be dazzled by laidback beachcomber chic in an array of nature-inspired prints utilising a palette of warm tones that take inspiration from the stunning beaches of Goa, the Indian Ocean and Australia.  The collection comprises a range of bias-cut slip dresses, wrap skirts, dresses, jumpsuits and other separates that provide versatility and an elegance evocative of warm Summer nights and long days by the seashore. This collection is crafted with natural fabrics such as silk habotai, linen/cotton blends and silk/cotton blends, sand washed to produce softly draped, wearable clothing that will take you seamlessly from the beach to the evening.

The venue, Temasek Reflections, will be transformed for the night to showcase the Platonic Dreams – Resort 2020 collection, alongside designer’s Frieda Brides and Mr G.
